3 Girls on a Jetty recreated in fabic

As promised, I am finally sharing my final project for my textiles class.  Here it is.

3 Girls on a Jetty in fabric
We were asked to pick a painting and then to reinterpret it with fabric.  I chose Edvard Munch's "3 Girls on a Jetty"
I love the simplicity and Scandinavian-ness of the painting.

It took about 3 weeks of work, and a lot of headaches.   I don't usually like to toot my own horn (being of Scandinavian extraction and all), but I am really proud of the final product.

The trees and shrubs were created with a dry felting technique.  I also quilted and tufted the large tree to give it extra dimension.  The 3 girls were also dry felted, and then I hand sewn dresses for each, then I placed them on a screw so you could turn them.
The ground effect was done by a series of appliques and creative pleating. It was then added to a quilt batting and random embroidery was added.

Here is a side shot to show the dimension of the piece.

Thanks for letting me share.

  1. Wow! Do I ever love this!!! I graduated with my degree in art and then taught art in public schools...but now I'm a stay at home mom who is addicted to sewing and only gets to teach art on the weekends. ANYWAYS....this combines two of my very favorite things--art and fabric!!! How cool. I totally love it and it is beautiful...plus I think it is so awesome that you put the little ladies on screws so you can turn them around.

    So great!

  6. Oh wow. This is sooooooooooo fun. It DOES look like a lot of work but so worth the effort when I look at that final result. Being Norwegian I get the whole brag not thing but really, you should be flaunting this lovely. Your interpretation of that art work is fabulous.
Thanks for sharing this week on BeColorful.
